Committees

We currently have five committees driving our chapter's activities. If you would like to get involved or learn more about any of them, please email the committee chair directly. We look forward to having you join us!
Policy
Committee

Some activities of this committee includes preparing Policy Briefs.  Policy Briefs are short, non-technical documents that presents a perspective or recommendations about a topic, explores important issues, or delivers policy advice.  In the past SCB has prepared briefs to express our opinion to a variety of audiences from congress to the local Davis government.  Briefs can be prepared about any topic we feel is important.

Committee Chairs:

Education & Outreach Committee

The Education and Outreach committee coordinates opportunities for SCB members to engage with non-academic audiences on conservation topics. We have run an elementary-school program called 'Watch it, Don't Squash it!" which we will continue this year;  get in touch if you'd like to be involved, and watch for announcements on this site.

We will also develop new activities for SCB members to get experience with outreach, so let us know if you have ideas for activities and watch the SCB listserve for more ways to get involved.

Committee Chairs:

 Eric Tymstra  (etymstra@gmail.com)

 Lea Pollack (leak.pollack@gmail.com)

This committee is designed to promote discussion in an informal setting regarding issues related to conservation, policy, sustainability and education, encourage collaborations across different SCB chapters, and organize the yearly fundraiser. Past events have included quarterly happy hours, film nights and day trips. Stay tuned for upcoming events that will be announced on this site and the listserve.

Suggestions for future events and ways to fundraise are welcome and appreciated! Please contact our committee chair or treasurer.

Stewardship Committee

California is one of the world's biodiversity hot spots, and the Stewardship Committee brings you opportunities to actively engage in local conservation and restoration efforts. We partner with local organizations to offer you the chance to get outside and learn about local ecosystems while supporting native plant restoration and wildlife monitoring initiatives. We intend for these projects to be fun and to have a beneficial impact, but also to help you learn and practice new skills through exchanges with knowledgeable peers and local professionals. Organizations we have worked with include the Putah Creek Council, Audubon California, and the Cache Creek Conservancy Nature Preserve.

Currently, our main effort is working with the Yolo Audubon Society on a long-term bird phenology monitoring project for Audubon California. You can join us for the surveys at Bobcat Ranch, just west of Winters. This expanse of rolling hills and oak savanna is not open to the general public, aside from this project which aims to evaluate shifts in bird behavior from climate change. All levels of experience are welcome!

We also have a project lead by Alison Ke working with the City of Davis, the Wildlife Museum, and the local community to create a bluebird nest box network throughout parks in Davis. Contact Alison for more information about how to get involved with the Davis Nestbox Network!

Sustainability Committee

The Sustainability Committee was founded in 2008 as an independent committee through the Graduate Group in Ecology.  As of spring 2014, it has been operating as a committee within the SCB-D.  The group is currently coordinating the use of an ever growing collection of reusable place settings for campus events and collaborating with the campus sustainability coordinator to expand the our efforts to make departmental trips carbon neutral.  Interested in sustainability on campus or in our local area?  Email Aviv to get the most current information about our current meetings and endeavors!
